RETURN TO THE ROOT OF MIND
Gall bladder.13 or BENSHEN in Chinese and Mind root or Root spirit in English is an Acupuncture point of Gall bladder meridian. GB.13 is a very effective point for treating mental and emotional problems. This point, along with HT.5 and GB.38 is used in the psychiatric practice of the Nanjing Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital for Schizophrenia and Split personality. (Maciocia)
Jealousy and suspicion are constant feelings in Schizophrenic patients, thus this point is useful in treating these irrelevant feelings. GB.13 has a powerful effect in relieving anxiety due to persistent worry and obsessive thoughts. The meaning ‘Mind root’ implies that the essence of the mind is connected to the Kidney jing and kidneys are the foundation of life, yin/yang, and essence in Chinese medicine. So, in this way, GB.13 is the point where essence or jing accumulates, hence the name ‘Root spirit’ also. We need a strong essence for mind clarity and emotional harmony.
The ‘Great Dictionary of Acupuncture’ says that GB.13 is a place or point that makes the mind (Shen) return to its roots. (Maciocia). This is a very good point to treat severe depression. It strengthens mental clarity, willpower, and memory.
Headaches, migraines, and dizziness are treated when the Liver yang energy is hyperactive. Stagnant Liver energy is one of the root causes where free flow of energy is blocked leading to blood stasis and stagnant energy. This stagnation can create havoc in the mind as the emotions are not processed freely leading to all kinds of mental and emotional problems. Schizophrenia, depression, jealousy, and suspicion are mental disorders where a person is stuck in one frame of mind.
